The Future Of Travel Looks Bright in the New River Gorge

A National Travel and Tourism Week 2022 Recap

West Virginia’s diverse economy has moved beyond the state’s history of resource extraction to now include many different products and services. Among those key industries are travel and tourism. Tourism in West Virginia has a $13 million daily economic impact, and the tourism industry employs more than 45,000 people throughout the state. One of the many tourist attractions in West Virginia is America’s newest national park — New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. We welcome you to celebrate the #FutureOfTravel with us as you map out your summer travel plans.

National Travel and Tourism Week serves as an annual industry tradition that highlights the value that travel holds for our economy, businesses, personal well-being and more. The 39th annual NTTW (May 1-7, 2022) recognized the Future of Travel and the critical role our industry will play in rebuilding the workforce, helping communities recover, fostering sustainability, ushering in new innovations and reconnecting travelers in the United States and around the world.

The New River Gorge CVB is a destination marketing organization with the mission to promote Fayette County as a visitor-friendly destination. In 2021, the Visitor Center welcomed 5,300 visitors from 35 states and 4 countries. And with the designation of the new national park at the end of 2020, our area saw a 30 percent increase in visitation last year. Additionally, the annual economic impact of tourism in the New River Gorge (Fayette County) included 79.6 million dollars in travel-generated spending and 1,050 jobs supported by tourism.

We encourage you to visit our social media accounts — Facebook, Twitter and Instagram — as we share the positive impacts tourism has created. Whether you are a yearly visitor, a local who supports the area or someone who is interested in visiting soon, everyone is invited to celebrate.

One of the best (and easiest) ways to back our tourism industry is to support the local businesses and attractions of the New River Gorge. From dining and shopping to outdoor adventures and annual events — there are many ways to get involved!

What are your 2022 summer plans? Now is the perfect time to plan your dream getaway to the New River Gorge! From the water to the sky, outdoor activities are all around in the Gorge. Our area is home to many rivers, lakes and streams that provide the perfect playground for water activities like paddleboarding, kayaking, rafting and fishing. Other family-friendly adventures on the water include jet boat tours, swimming and an outdoor waterpark. Thrill-seekers can take in an aerial view of the Gorge on a guided rock climbing trip, or soar through our forested canopies on a zipline tour. Other ways to catch a unique glimpse from above are biplane rides and Bridge Walk tours. For those who prefer to stay on the ground, trek through the vast network of scenic trails and hike to some of the most popular spots in West Virginia. Or hop on a mountain bike and explore the winding routes of the Gorge. Settle in after your adventures at a wooded treehouse cabin, boutique vacation rental in the heart of town, or a convenient hotel with all the amenities.
