Don’t Wait Until Summer: Why Spring Is Prime Rafting Season in the New River Gorge

Most people assume summer is the best time to whitewater raft in the New River Gorge, but spring offers a thrill all its own. With lush scenery and fewer crowds, it’s a prime time to hit the water. Whether you’ve rafted here before or you’re planning your first trip, both seasons provide a one-of-a-kind adventure. Here’s why spring rafting in the New River Gorge deserves a spot on your bucket list.

When Does Rafting Season Start?

Rafting season in the New River Gorge kicks off in April. As with any spring adventure, it’s best to come prepared for the unexpected. Cool, crisp mornings can quickly turn into warm, sunny afternoons. For chillier days on the water, wetsuits and splash gear are available to rent through local outfitters so you can stay comfortable and focus on the fun.

What Makes Spring Rafting Different?

Snowmelt combined with seasonal rainfall creates bigger waves than you’ll typically find in summer. If you’ve rafted the New River before, spring can make it feel like an entirely different river.

The scenery is a bonus, too. As wildflowers bloom and leaves begin to fill in, the Gorge is at its most vibrant. And since the canopy hasn’t fully filled out yet, you’ll still have clear views of the rugged cliffs and canyon walls.

Spring brings a quieter kind of rafting experience, one that feels more personal. The open river gives you plenty of space to take it all in, making the trip feel truly your own.

What Makes Summer Rafting Different?

Summer rafting is what the New River Gorge is perhaps best known for, and for good reason. Excitement is in the air with outfitters and towns bustling with people, and the warm water is perfect for floating and swimming between rapids. It’s the kind of summer adventure that’s even better shared, whether you’re bringing the whole family or gathering a group of friends for a day on the river.

Whichever season you choose, you’ll have two sections of the New River to pick from:

The Upper New

Great for families or those looking for a more relaxed float, the Upper New winds through beautiful scenery with calm stretches for swimming mixed between Class I–III rapids. Suitable for ages 6 and up, it’s an ideal introduction to whitewater rafting. Along the way, paddlers are treated to views of historic landmarks like the riverside town of Thurmond.

The Lower New

The Lower New is the perfect fit for adventurous families, first-time thrill seekers and group outings. With larger rapids and fun, rolling waves, it brings a rollercoaster-like feel to the river experience. Recommended for ages 12 and up, the trip finishes with a grand finale beneath the iconic New River Gorge Bridge, an unforgettable way to end a day on the water.

Which Season Is Right for You?

Choose spring if you:

  • Want bigger, more powerful rapids
  • Prefer a quieter, more intimate river experience
  • Want to see the Gorge at one of its most scenic times of year

Choose summer if you:

  • Are rafting for the first time
  • Are bringing kids along
  • Want warmer water and a lively atmosphere

Choose both if you want the full New River Gorge experience (and we think you should).
