The Perfect 3-Day Spring Itinerary For The New River Gorge

Say goodbye to winter and welcome the beauty of spring in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Whether you’re looking for adventure or simply want to take in the scenery, this three-day itinerary has everything you need for a refreshing seasonal getaway.

Day One

Wake up early to the sound of birds chirping and fog lifting over the Gorge. Getting an early start means fewer crowds and more serene views. Start your day by exploring one of the area’s popular hiking trails.

Pick A Hiking Route

The Endless Wall Trail is a 2.4-mile route that winds through lush forests, offering views of the Gorge throughout. About halfway in, a short side trail leads to Diamond Point Overlook, one of the best vantage points in the park. For another breathtaking view, the Long Point Trail is a moderate 1.6-mile route that leads to a rocky outcrop with an unparalleled panoramic perspective of the New River Gorge Bridge.

Other great trails to consider include Kaymoor Miners Trail, Burnwood Trail and White Oak Rail Trail, as well as scenic hikes at Babcock State Park and Hawks Nest State Park.

Afternoon Activities

After enjoying lunch in a nearby town, stop by the Canyon Rim Visitor Center to find park information and view exhibits showcasing the people, industry and ecology of the Gorge. Walk the Canyon Rim Boardwalk for an up-close view of the New River Gorge Bridge. The upper deck is wheelchair-accessible, while the lower deck requires descending 178 steps.

For a truly unique experience, take a guided tour along the catwalk beneath the New River Gorge Bridge. The Bridge Walk tour takes about three hours and lets you walk the entire 3,030-foot span while suspended 850 feet above the river. It’s an adventure that offers an unforgettable view of the Gorge.

Evening Plans

Cap off the day with a delicious meal at a unique restaurant, from locally sourced dishes to international flavors. Then, find the perfect spot to watch a stunning New River Gorge sunset to end your night on a peaceful note.

Day Two

After a well-earned rest, fuel up with a hearty brunch before tackling an adrenaline-filled morning.

Choose Your Adventure

Whitewater rafting is an exciting way to experience the New River in the spring. With seasonal rains bringing thrilling rapids, this is an ideal time to hit the water. The river features everything from beginner-friendly Class I–III rapids to stretches featuring heart-pounding Class IV rapids. Rafting this time of year often means fewer crowds and great deals from local outfitters.

If rock climbing is more your style, you’re in luck! The New River Gorge is an East Coast climbing mecca, with trad, sport and bouldering routes for all skill levels. A guided climbing session allows for incredible views from the cliffs and an exhilarating challenge.

Afternoon Activities

After an action-packed morning, take a leisurely drive to visit some of the region’s stunning waterfalls. Cathedral Falls, one of West Virginia’s highest waterfalls, cascades over a 60-foot sandstone cliff along the Midland Trail (Route 60). Just down the road, Kanawha Falls stretches across the Kanawha River, creating a broad and impressive display. Many visitors enjoy a better view by paddleboarding near the falls.

Enjoy The Nightlife

Relax at a local brewery or pub, where you can enjoy a casual meal and craft beer. Many spots host trivia nights, live performances and themed events, making for a fun and laid-back evening.

Day Three

Start your final day with an outdoor excursion that offers a new way to experience the Gorge.
