Pet-Friendly Adventures in the New River Gorge

Here in the New River Gorge, we believe that life is better with your four-legged friend. That’s why we’ve got plenty of pet-friendly activities and lodging options that will surely satisfy you and your pooch.

What To Do

When planning a getaway to the Gorge, don’t worry that your pet won’t have much to do. There are endless adventures that are human and pup-approved!

Hiking

Take to the trails and experience the picturesque views with your dog. Pets are allowed on all of the trails in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, but you have to make sure that your animal stays on a leash and has plenty of water. Browse our trail guide to find some of our favorite local routes. From iconic spots like Long Point and Endless Wall to historic area walks like the Kaymoor Miners Trail and Rend Trail, spend a whole afternoon outdoors with your pet.

Climbing

For the climbing enthusiasts visiting the Gorge, crag dogs are always welcome to join! Just make sure your dog is on a leash and out of the way of belayers. Check out our Rock Climbing 101 blog for some awesome climbing tips and popular spots before you head out.

Stand-up Paddleboarding

Is your dog comfortable in the water? SUP with your pup! Let your pet cool off with you on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) trip and explore some of the most beautiful and scenic waters of the New River Gorge. Head to the tranquil waters of Summersville Lake, Kanawha Falls or Plum Orchard Lake. Before you tackle a flat-water paradise, make sure your dog has a life jacket! If you are new to SUPing, book a trip or rent equipment from ACE Adventure Resort or Adventures on the Gorge

Dog Park

For a true pet adventure that your pup will definitely love, visit the Fayetteville Dog Park or the Doc Hamilton Dog Park in Oak Hill! Both parks are equipped with agility equipment for large and small dogs, as well as benches and water fountains.

Where To Eat

After a full day of adventuring, fuel up with your furry friend at one of our many pet-friendly restaurants. Voted “Best Pet-Friendly Adventure” in the 2020 Best of the Blue Ridge, Arrowhead Bike Farm lives up to the hype! In addition to the campground and bike shop, Arrowhead Bike Farm has its own restaurant — The Handle Bar + Kitchen. Enjoy a tasty fish taco, vegan burrito or a West Virginia-made brat. The restaurant’s Biergarten has a ton of outdoor space with picnic tables and fire pits. Another popular pet-friendly dive is the Burrito Bar at Breeze Hill. Serving unique burrito and taco combinations, the Burrito Bar offers a great outdoor atmosphere for you and your pup! Many of our other local dining spots offer outdoor dining in the warmer months, which is perfect for your dog. View the full list of dining options to find the best spot for you.
