Explore The Spooky Side Of The New River Gorge

Spooky season is here, and with it comes a full lineup of Halloween-themed fun! Whether you love the candy, costumes or creepy thrills, there are plenty of ways to celebrate in the New River Gorge.

Visit A New River Gorge Ghost Town

The New River Gorge has several hauntingly beautiful sites, and according to local lore, a few of these places might even be home to lingering spirits. Even if you don’t encounter anything supernatural, the remains of these once-bustling communities are fascinating to explore.

Wander Through the Town of Thurmond

Once a booming railroad and coal town, Thurmond now has a population of just five residents. Its well-preserved buildings, including hotels, a bank and train depot, invite curious visitors to explore what remains. The town’s quiet, eerie atmosphere has led many to believe it’s haunted. Determine that for yourself by taking a Thurmond Walking Tour!

Step Back in Time in Kaymoor

Kaymoor was one of the New River Gorge’s most successful coal operations in the early 1900s. By the 1950s, the town had emptied, and the site eventually collapsed. Today, the National Park Service has made it easier to visit, with steps leading down from the trail to the historic remains below.

Explore the Remnants of Nuttallburg

Another ghost town hidden in the Gorge, Nuttallburg, was established in 1873, soon after the C&O Railway opened. Informational signs throughout the site reveal what life was like in this coal camp. Key features that remain include coke ovens, a massive conveyor belt, mining structures and the remnants of worker homes.

Cross Off a Spot on the West Virginia Paranormal Trail

Book an overnight stay (if you dare) at the historic Glen Ferris Inn. Guests have reported seeing a friendly, bearded ghost known as the Colonel. He’s said to roam the halls and close doors, but don’t worry, he’s more playful than frightful. The Glen Ferris Inn is featured on the West Virginia Paranormal Trail, where you can check in at haunted spots across the state and win prizes along the way.

Fly Through the Air at Night

Do you think obstacle and ropes courses are challenging in the daylight? Try tackling them after dark! Once the sun sets, Adventures on the Gorge transforms its TimberTrek course into MoonTrek, a glowing, high-flying nighttime adventure. Perfect for families with kids ages six and up, this experience adds a wickedly entertaining twist to your trip.
