Everything You Need to Plan the Perfect Long Weekend in the New River Gorge
May 13, 2026Sometimes, a long weekend getaway is exactly what you need. Luckily, the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is a convenient East Coast destination packed with adventure, scenic views, great restaurants and plenty of places to stay. Here is everything you need to plan the perfect long weekend in the Gorge.
Step 1: Choose Your Adventures
The New River Gorge is home to adventures both mild and wild, making it easy for everyone to find the right activity.
Take On The Rapids
There is no better way to kick off summer than with a refreshing and exhilarating ride down the New River. The river features everything from beginner-friendly Class I–III rapids to Class IV+ stretches that feel like a whitewater rollercoaster. Best of all, there are no amusement ride lines. Simply book a trip with a local outfitter and let experienced guides lead you through the rapids.
Hit The Trails
Hike to some of West Virginia’s most iconic overlooks or venture beyond the popular trails to discover what makes this area more than just gorgeous scenery. The 2.4-mile Endless Wall Trail and the 1.6-mile Long Point Trail both provide incredible views of the New River Gorge Bridge and the surrounding gorge. For a quieter experience, explore the 1.2-mile Burnwood Trail as it winds through ancient forests and rhododendron thickets. You can also step into the region’s history on trails leading to ghost towns and abandoned mine sites, including the 1.6-mile Kaymoor Miners Trail.
Bike Through The Gorge
Pedal through the Gorge on a mountain biking adventure filled with winding singletrack and scenic forest views. Beginners can enjoy smooth-flowing trails, while experienced riders can tackle technical rock gardens and root-filled descents. The Arrowhead Trails offer stacked loops with easier trails at the center, while Needleseye Park features eight miles of singletrack that progress from beginner-friendly loops to intermediate and advanced terrain. Local bike shops can help you gear up and plan your route.

Climb Above It All
Rock climbing offers a unique way to experience the New River Gorge from above. The area is home to vast sandstone cliffs featuring more than 3,000 established climbing routes across 60 miles of cliffline, along with hundreds of authorized bouldering areas. New to climbing? Expert guides can help you learn the basics and experience the Gorge safely and confidently.
Try Something Different
Beyond rafting and hiking, the Gorge offers many other adventures, including horseback riding, fishing, ziplining and disc golf. For a truly one-of-a-kind experience, take a Bridge Walk tour along the catwalk directly beneath the New River Gorge Bridge. This three-hour guided tour spans the bridge’s full 3,030-foot length, 850 feet above the New River, with plenty of opportunities to take in panoramic sights.
Step 2: Explore Scenic Sights
While your adventures will likely come with beautiful scenery, there are still many must-see spots worth adding to your itinerary.
Take a drive along Fayette Station Road, a narrow and winding eight-mile route that descends into the Gorge, crosses the river and climbs back out again. Along the way, you will find some of the best views of the New River Gorge Bridge and the New River.
For another scenic drive, follow the Midland Trail (Route 60) and stop to visit some of the region’s most stunning waterfalls. Cathedral Falls cascades more than 60 feet over a sandstone cliff, making it one of West Virginia’s tallest waterfalls. Just down the road, Kanawha Falls stretches across the Kanawha River. You can even explore featured waterfalls along the West Virginia Waterfall Trail to earn prizes!
For a different perspective, explore our historic towns. The Thurmond Walking Tour offers a glimpse into the once-bustling railroad town of Thurmond, which at one time handled more coal traffic than Cincinnati. Walk past preserved buildings like hotels, a bank and the train depot. In nearby Mount Hope, the Mount Hope Historic Walking Tour showcases colorful murals, storied streetscapes and the area’s rich coalfield heritage.

Step 3: Refuel Between Adventures
In the New River Gorge, you will have no trouble finding something delicious to satisfy your appetite.
Start your morning at a local cafe with a fresh cup of coffee, or ease into the day with brunch. Grab a quick lunch between adventures before settling in for dinner in one of the Gorge’s welcoming small towns. From international cuisine to West Virginia classics and homestyle favorites, there is something for everyone. To top it all off, treat yourself to a scoop of ice cream or unwind at a local brewery.
Step 4: Pick The Perfect Stay
Perhaps the most important part of planning your long weekend is choosing the perfect place to stay.
The New River Gorge has accommodations for every travel style, from rustic cabins tucked away in the woods to convenient hotels. Local inns provide cozy charm and all the comforts of home, while scenic campsites offer the chance to sleep under the stars for a truly memorable stay. Many lodging options are also pet-friendly, so your four-legged companions can join the adventure!
