Dog Days of Summer

Here in the New River Gorge, we love furry friends, too! If you are planning an upcoming visit to the Gorge and are worried your four-legged companion might not have much to do — don’t be! The New River Gorge is extremely pet-friendly with endless adventures for you and your pet. Here are some of our favorites!

Take to the Trails
From Long Point to Endless Wall, we are known for our hiking trails that offer picturesque views of the Gorge. Luckily, pets are allowed on all of the trails in the New River Gorge National River! Just make sure your animal pal stays on a leash and that you bring plenty of water to share.

One of the most famous Instagram spots in the New River Gorge, the rocky outcrop on Long Point trail is the perfect place to stop and relax with your pup. @mesaandthemountains

It’s always important to bring the proper gear with you on hikes and that includes those for your pet as well! Water, leash, shades… you name it! @wildwonderfuloutdooradventures

Experience the Views

Hiking is not the only way to spend time with your animal and take in gorgeous scenery. Travel to an easily accessible overlook, and you can still experience a beautiful view. This activity is ideal if the weather is too warm for your pet or if they are not a trail dog.

The overlook at Hawks Nest State Park is a convenient pitstop when traveling on Route 60. Let your pet get out of the car for a bit and stretch their legs. Don’t forget to snap a photo of the amazing landscape! @poerealpug

Hit the Water

Is your dog more adventurous than the rest? Head to the river and let them splash around! From rafting partners to swimming sidekicks, bring your water-loving pet to the New River Gorge for an exciting excursion! Just make sure your animal is comfortable in the water and is wearing a life jacket. If your four-legged friend still needs a life jacket, stop by ACE Adventure Gear or Waterstone Outdoors to grab one while you’re in the area!

Guard the Gear

For all those climbers that also love their dogs, don’t worry! Crag dogs are welcome in the New River Gorge. When bringing your dog with you to a climbing area, make sure it is on a leash, out of the way of belayers and is never left on the ground alone.

Climbing is hard work and always requires a little rest … even if it’s on the belayer’s gloves. @cragdogsam

Luckily, hammocks are dog-friendly! This is a perfect way to relax with your pup after conquering a climbing route. @reeseandherpieces

If you’re lucky, your dog might even help you pack up!

Run Wild

While you are in the area, check out the Oak Hill Dog Park for your pet’s own personal New River Gorge adventure!

With agility equipment for small and large dogs, the dog park is a great place to spend the afternoon!

Not a Dog Person?

If you’ve got a feisty feline wanting to go mountain biking, we know the place for you! @arrowheadbikefarm

Where To Stay

Camping is an obvious option for a pet-friendly night in the Gorge, but leaving your animals in a tent is not a safe choice during the summer months. Luckily, Hemlock Haven Luxury Cabins are all pet-friendly! ACE Adventure Resort, Adventures on the Gorge and River Expeditions also have pet-friendly lodging options.

Let your pets roam free at Hemlock Haven Luxury Cabins with a fenced in yard!
