A Guide to Kid-Friendly Summer Adventures in the New River Gorge

Summer is the perfect time to make lasting memories with your family, and there’s no better place to do it than the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. From whitewater rafting and aerial activities to hiking, biking and more, here’s your guide to kid-friendly summer adventures in the Gorge.

Make A Splash

The best way to kick off your trip is on the water!

Whitewater Rafting

One of the most popular activities in the Gorge, whitewater rafting is a memorable way to experience the outdoors while working together as a family. The New River offers two sections to paddle: the Upper and the Lower.

The Upper New is great for families because it features calm stretches for swimming mixed with Class I–III rapids. Suitable for ages 6 and up, it’s an ideal introduction to whitewater rafting. Many outfitters even let little ones paddle their own inflatable kayaks in calmer sections of the Upper!

For those with older children looking for more of a challenge, the Lower New features larger rapids and fun, rolling waves. This section is recommended for ages 12 and up.

Jet Boat Ride

For a refreshing way to experience the Gorge, hop aboard a New River Jet Boat. Feel the cool breeze and river spray as you enjoy a unique view of the New River Gorge Bridge from the water.

Swimming

When it’s time to cool off, go for a swim! The ACE Adventure Waterpark is perfect for a family day of fun, featuring two 40-foot-tall waterslides, giant inflatables, ziplines, lounging areas and more.

If you prefer a traditional pool, seasonal swimming (Memorial Day through Labor Day) is available for overnight guests at Hawks Nest State Park, River Expeditions and Adventures on the Gorge.

Reach New Heights

See the New River Gorge from an entirely new perspective with one of its many aerial adventures.

Ziplining

Soar through the treetops on a zipline tour and take in views from above. Ziplining is a great opportunity for kids to face their fears and build confidence.

Looking for an additional challenge? Tackle a ropes course and take on a variety of challenging obstacles while working together or embracing a little friendly competition. ACE Adventure Resort, Adventures on the Gorge. and River Expeditions all offer aerial courses.

Bridge Walk

For another unforgettable experience, book a Bridge Walk tour. This guided adventure takes you across the 24-inch-wide catwalk beneath the New River Gorge Bridge. The three-hour tour spans the bridge’s entire 3,030-foot length, suspended 850 feet above the New River. With a minimum age of 8, it’s an exciting activity for adventurous families.

Rock Climbing

If your kids love to climb, let them put their skills to the test on natural sandstone rock. Guided rock climbing trips offer a safe introduction to the sport. Experienced instructors provide all necessary equipment, teach proper climbing techniques and guide your family every step of the way.

Explore State Parks

The New River Gorge is home to two West Virginia State Parks: Babcock and Hawks Nest.

Start your day at Babcock State Park by visiting the Glade Creek Grist Mill, one of West Virginia’s most photographed landmarks. Don’t forget to snap a photo on the Almost Heaven swing overlooking the mill!

The park also features 17 hiking trails, including the one-mile Lake View Trail around Boley Lake and the quarter-mile Mountain Health Trail, an interpretive nature trail. Between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day, rent paddleboats, rowboats and canoes from the Boley Lake Marina.

At Hawks Nest State Park, you’ll find incredible overlooks and miles of hiking trails. The quarter-mile Hawks Nest Overlook Trail leads to a panoramic view of the New River, Hawks Nest Dam, Tunnel area and surrounding mountains. For a longer hike, take the 1.5-mile Fisherman’s Trail for a look at the Hawks Nest Dam and Turkey Creek Waterfall.

Hit The Trails

Explore the area on two wheels! The Gorge has mountain biking trails for a variety of skill levels, with routes featuring exhilarating descents, rewarding climbs and beautiful scenery along the way.

Need equipment? Stop by one of the area’s local bike shops for a rental or book a guided ride before heading out.

Learn About The National Park

Add a little learning to your trip with a visit to the Canyon Rim Visitor Center. Browse exhibits highlighting the people, industry and ecology that have shaped the Gorge, and find helpful park information.

While you’re there, have your kids join the National Park Junior Ranger Program. Pick up a Junior Ranger book, complete the outdoor activities and earn an official Junior Ranger badge.

Before leaving the Visitor Center, be sure to walk the Canyon Rim Boardwalk for an up-close view of the New River Gorge Bridge. An accessible ramp leads to the first overlook, while 178 steps descend to a lower viewing area.

Refuel & Relax

After a day of adventure, treat the family to one of the Gorge’s many kid-approved dining spots, from pizza and ice cream to a variety of options that still cater to grown-up tastes.

When it’s time to unwind, spend the night under the stars at a campground or settle into a cabin in a small town or at a nearby state park.
