The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is a four-season destination, but summer is when adventure is in full swing. From rushing rapids and scenic overlooks to festivals, local flavors and unforgettable experiences, there are countless ways to make memories here. If you’re planning your next getaway, here are seven reasons the New River Gorge should be on your summer bucket list.
1. Go Whitewater Rafting
No summer trip is complete without a whitewater adventure. Home to some of the best rafting on the East Coast, the Gorge has trips for families, beginners and thrill seekers alike.
Traveling with kids? Take a family-friendly float on the Upper New River. Suitable for ages six and up, this stretch features Class I–III rapids, along with plenty of opportunities to swim, float and enjoy the scenery between rapids.
For more excitement, tackle the Lower New River. Recommended for ages 12 and up, this trip delivers larger rapids, rolling waves and a thrilling finish beneath the iconic New River Gorge Bridge.
2. Find Your Favorite View
Summer is the perfect time to soak in lush greenery and sweeping views from the trails. Start with the Canyon Rim Boardwalk, a short 0.1-mile walk that provides one of the most popular views of the New River Gorge Bridge. An accessible ramp leads to the first overlook, while 178 steps descend to a lower viewing platform.
Hike the Bridge Trail for a different perspective. This moderately strenuous 0.86-mile route takes you beneath the longest steel arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere, offering close-up views many visitors never see.
The Burnwood Trail is a must for nature lovers. Recognized by the Old-Growth Forest Network, this 1.2-mile loop winds through towering trees, rhododendron thickets and a section of forest featuring trees dating back to the 17th century.
For the ultimate challenge, the Kaymoor Miners Trail leads down 821 stairs into the Gorge, revealing the remains of the historic Kaymoor coal mining complex, including a processing plant, coke ovens and the former townsite.
3. Stay Cool On the Water
Not every summer activity has to involve whitewater. The New River Gorge offers many ways to enjoy the water at a slower pace.
Hawks Nest Lake is one of the best destinations for flatwater kayaking. Formed by a dammed section of the New River, the lake’s calm waters and scenic surroundings make it ideal for beginners and families.
For paddleboarding, few experiences compare to exploring Kanawha Falls. Launch from the Kanawha River boat launch and paddle toward the coves hidden behind the falls for a stunning view only available from the water.
For a sightseeing adventure, hop aboard a New River Jet Boats tour. Departing from Hawks Nest State Park, this excursion provides unique views of the New River Gorge Bridge from below while offering a fun ride along the river.
4. See the Gorge From a New Perspective
The Gorge is home to many one-of-a-kind activities worth adding to your itinerary. For a perspective unlike any other, book a Bridge Walk tour. This guided trip takes visitors across the 24-inch-wide catwalk beneath the New River Gorge Bridge. The three-hour tour spans the bridge’s full 3,030-foot length, suspended 850 feet above the New River.
Rock climbing is another unforgettable way to experience the Gorge. The area features more than 3,000 established climbing routes along 60 miles of sandstone cliffs, as well as hundreds of bouldering areas. Guided trips are available for beginners interested in learning the basics.
For an aerial view, take a biplane ride with Wild Blue Adventure Company and see the Gorge, the New River Gorge Bridge and the surrounding mountains from above. For an extra rush, add aerobatic maneuvers to your flight!
5. Attend a Summer Festival
Summer in the New River Gorge is packed with festivals, races, live music and community events.
June brings favorites like the Waynestock, Ansted Hometown Heritage Festival, Fayetteville Pride Summer Camp and the New River Gorge Trail Festival. Those looking for a challenge can take part in the Gritty Chix Mud Run, Captain Thurmond’s Challenge and the Thurmond Triathlon.
Celebrate Independence Day at Fayetteville’s Heritage Festival and Fourth of July Celebration, then close out summer at the Boots in the Gorge Country Music Festival and Domefest.
6. Explore the Local Food Scene
After a day of adventure, reward yourself with a great meal. The towns surrounding the Gorge offer everything from cozy coffee shops and brunch spots to restaurants serving Appalachian favorites and international cuisine.
7. Camp Under the Stars
Nothing says summer quite like spending a night outdoors. Campgrounds throughout the Gorge have options for every style of traveler, from primitive tent spots to full-service RV sites with all the amenities.
