5 Can’t-Miss Fall Experiences in the New River Gorge

1. Raft the Gauley River  

For a seasonal adventure like no other, raft the Gauley River. Gauley season is a brief but thrilling time of year when the Gauley River roars to life with scheduled dam releases from Summersville Lake for six weekends in September and October.

Aptly nicknamed the “Beast of the East,” thrill-seekers from all over the country come to tackle 25 miles of the wildest rapids. The Gauley River consists of two distinct sections: the Upper and Lower Gauley. 

The Lower Gauley is similar to the Lower New River, featuring Class III-V rapids. It is a challenging section, but still approachable for many rafters. The Upper Gauley is an adrenaline-fueled ride, defined by the iconic Class V “Big 5” rapids: Insignificant, Pillow Rock, Lost Paddle, Iron Ring and Sweet’s Falls. 2. Attend Bridge Day

Take in the colorful foliage from the New River Gorge Bridge and watch as professionals BASE jump and rappel from the 876-foot structure during Bridge Day on October 17, 2026. Bridge Day is always on the third Saturday of October and is the only day of the year when pedestrians are allowed on the bridge, which is the longest single-arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere. As West Virginia’s largest single-day festival and one of the world’s most exciting extreme sports events, Bridge Day is an experience you just have to see for yourself. 

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and beyond the thrills, you’ll find 200 vendors lining the bridge with everything from tasty treats to handcrafted art. Make it a full weekend with the Taste of Bridge Day, Active Southern West Virginia’s Bridge Day 5K Run, the Bridge Day Chili Cook-off and more.

3. Take A Walk Beneath the New River Gorge Bridge

After walking across the New River Gorge Bridge during Bridge Day, get a whole new perspective beneath it on a Bridge Walk tour. This guided experience takes you across the 24-inch catwalk directly under the bridge, stretching the full 3,030-foot length and standing 850 feet above the New River. 

In addition to the one-of-a-kind sights, your tour guides will teach you about the history of the area and share facts about the bridge’s construction. Don’t forget to snap some photos and take in the Gorge in all its autumnal glory!

4. Find the Best Fall Views 

Experience the beautiful foliage from the trails! Hike to some of West Virginia’s most popular overlooks, or venture beyond the main routes to discover the history and hidden gems that make this place more than gorgeous. 

For an easy, scenic option, take the 1.2-mile Burnwood Trail through an old-growth forest filled with towering trees dating back to the 17th century. Or step into history on the Kaymoor Miners Trail and descend 821 steps into the Gorge to explore the remnants of a once-bustling Kaymoor mine site, including a coal processing plant, coke ovens and a townsite. 

Looking for the ultimate autumn scene? Make your way to Babcock State Park and stop by the Glade Creek Grist Mill, one of the state’s most photographed spots. With the historic mill framed by vibrant leaves, it’s easy to see why.
