Carnifex Ferry Civil War Battle Reenactment | Sept. 9-11

Get caught up in the drama of an explosive reenactment of the U.S. Army’s victory over the Rebels on Sept. 10!
Throughout the weekend, stirring Council of War, balls, string bands and more unfold at Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park. Not too many people know the Gauley River is a historic site, but these re-enactors will completely immerse you in the Gorge’s colorful past.

Hidden History Weekend | Sept. 23-25

Later this month, the New River Gorge’s state and national parks will lead you on creative historic activities. They’re free, too! Join rangers for events like:

Hidden History Photo Contest

Show us your definition of West Virginia history! Find a subject, snap the shutter and share your discovery with the National Park Service. Your photo could earn statewide recognition and some prizes!
Sleuth around for Hidden History subjects throughout the National Parks of Southern West Virginia or National Coal Heritage Areas. (You can even edit and manipulate your photo for the “creative” category.)
Every Best in Show winner will earn a digital photo frame, and the adult Best in Show wins 2 nights at Twin Falls Resort during the Spring Photography Workshop. Even the youth Best in Show winner gets a generous award: a digital camera! All of the top photos will be shown at rotating exhibits, including a stay at the prestigious Tamarack, “the Best of West Virginia” art gallery.
