DESCRIPTION:Nov. 6 at 10 am Fall Foliage hike on the Hawks Nest Rail trail. This easy 2.25 (4.5 total) mile hike down to the New River from Ansted follows the Mill creek. This scenic trail includes a foundation from an old mill\, waterfalls\, mines and more. The trail head is on Hawks Nest Rd ( turn by the Walgreens and go under route 60 )\nSee the best of the Southern West Virginia’s parks when you join one of our hikes. Hikes go at a leisurely pace\, and are led by Community Captains. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy closed toe shoes. You are welcome to bring walking sticks/hiking poles for assistance\, and are encouraged to bring your own water and sunscreen. The length of each hike may vary. Please contact us\, or find our Facebook event page for each hike for more details.\nAll hikes are perfect for grand-families\, groups with multiple interests\, and individuals. All are welcome! Youth are encouraged to attend but must be accompanied by a guardian and the adult must stay on site during the activity. Trained Community Captains deliver free\, beginner-level instructional programs to area parks. Gritty Chix Mud Run is back to ACE Adventure Resort this summer and we are ready to jump back into all that mud! You choose – the 5k Tenacious Trail or the Moxie Mile? Both woodland trails converge on the mud obstacle course. Obstacles have varying degrees of difficulty\, but all are manageable. Upper body strength is helpful and you have the option to bypass any obstacle you’re not comfortable tackling. Go for it before going around it – try to complete each one. It’s all about excitement\, laughter\, and camaraderie so we encourage applause\, hoots\, hollers\, and lending a helping hand. Water and first aid are stationed along the trails and at the finish line. Gritty Chix Mud Run always supports a great local cause too. Stay tuned for our benefactor announcement soon.

SUMMARY:Hawks Nest State Park Presents Mary Ingles Draper A Dramatic Presentation
DESCRIPTION:In 1755\, during the French and Indian War\, Ingles was a 23-year-old frontier wife living with her extended family at Drapers Meadow\, when a Shawnee war party attacked the settlement. Ingles\, her two sons and a sister-in-law were among the settlers captured. Ingles was separated from her boys and taken to a Shawnee settlement near the site of present-day Portsmouth\, OH\, and then on to Big Bone Lick in north-central Kentucky. SUMMARY:Black History Month Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:The City of Oak Hill is pleased to announce a 4-week lecture series in celebration of Black History Month. The series will take place every Saturday in February at 6pm in the City Council Chambers. Topics of the lecture series will range from Black Political Figures in Fayette County from 1896-1918 to Black Female Activist Who Impacted the World.\nMayor Wright planned the lecture series with the thought that many people may not know that the founder of Black History Month is a native of West Virginia and taught in the Fayette County School system from 1897-1900. Last year\, the mayor issued a proclamation honoring The Black Experience in American History to “urge all Oak Hill citizens to recognize the contributions of Black America.” One fact that the mayor cited at the January City Council meeting was that West Virginia’s first Black legislator\, Christopher Payne\, was elected in 1896 from Fayette County. Mayor Wright wanted to host this lecture series to expand upon the proclamation and to “promote an even better awareness of the contributions of Black Americans throughout history”.\nGuest lecturers include Mayor Daniel Wright\, retired educator\, and local historian. Rev. Ronald English\, former aide to Martin Luther King Jr. and now serves as an interim minister in Charleston and is a consultant in healing and restorative justice. Dr. Brucella Jordan is a prominent poet/author and Professor of History. Rev.
